Welcome to the Building the Success Interview Series, where we spotlight industry leaders and delve into their journeys, challenges and insights. In this episode, we’re thrilled to feature Stephen Jepson, a founder of programme and project management firm, Hadron Consulting, who brings over 25 years of experience to the table.
In our conversation, Stephen shared valuable insights into how real-world experience, a focus on learning, and an openness to challenges helped shape his success. Here’s a closer look at his journey and advice for those aspiring to advance their consulting career.
How Gaining Industry Experience Will Advance Your Consulting Career
Stephen Jepson’s career trajectory highlights the importance of gaining practical, hands-on experience early on.
After completing a year in industry whilst at University, Stephen went on to work with large firms like Drivers Jonas and Deloitte, Stephen learned essential business and project management skills. However, as his career progressed, he realised that gaining experience wasn’t just about clocking years in the industry but aligning his work with his passions. The key takeaway? Focus on experiences that offer both professional growth and personal satisfaction.
The Challenges and Rewards of Large Project Delivery
Stephen’s journey through large-scale projects, such as the London 2012 Olympics, provided invaluable lessons in managing complex, high-stakes projects. These experiences taught him the importance of clear communication, managing diverse teams and navigating challenges such as budget constraints and tight timelines. However, the rewards—seeing projects come to life, especially in sports and leisure—were unmatched. From Olympic-level sports facilities to local leisure centres, Stephen thrives on seeing the real-world impact of these spaces on communities.
Big Firm, Small Firm: Choosing the Right Consulting career Path
After years at major firms, Stephen transitioned to a smaller consultancy, Hadron Consulting, and found a different type of satisfaction. While large firms offer structure and scale, small firms like Hadron provide flexibility, a close-knit team culture and the opportunity to focus on niche areas like sports and leisure. Stephen’s advice? Don’t just choose a firm based on its size—find a place where you can do the work you love, with the people who share your values. At Hadron, this philosophy of collaboration and passion for the work has been key to their success.
